Who is Jim Yong Kim, nominee for World Bank president?

lavish — Tags: — unalmost @ 10:32 pm

The selection of Jim Yong Kim took many by surprise since he is not well known in Washington circles and wasn?t an expected candidate for the World Bank position.

President Obama has nominated Jim Yong Kim, a global health policy expert and the president of Dartmouth College, to run the World Bank.

The selection took many by surprise since Mr. Kim is not well known in Washington circles and wasn?t an expected candidate for the position. At least one other person had openly campaigned for the position, which was a break in protocol.

Before taking the reins at Dartmouth, Kim was active in health issues in developing countries for much of his career. Between 2004 and 2006, Kim was director of the World Health Organization?s HIV/AIDS Department. He was a co-founder of Partners in Health, which provides health care to the poor, and has worked on international tuberculosis policy.

Kim gained fame among Dartmouth students for his rapping, dancing spaceman routine during a school version of American Idol. (http://www.ivygateblog.com/2011/03/dartmouths-prez-kim-debuts-as-a-rapping-spaceman/)

Since the White House traditionally selects the president of the World Bank, Kim is now expected to take the helm. The current president, Robert Zoellick, will step down on June 30 after a five-year term.

?Jim has spent more than two decades working to improve conditions in developing countries around the world,? said Mr. Obama in a statement. ?The World Bank is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce poverty and raise standards of living around the globe, and Jim?s personal experience and years of service make him an ideal candidate for this job.?

The World Bank aims to reduce poverty and support development by giving financial and technical assistance to developing countries. Criticism of the World Bank ranges from disagreements over what kind of assistance is best to concerns about corruption to dissatisfaction with the United States having so much say in choosing the World Bank leader.

After Mr. Zoellick announced last month he was stepping down, Jeffrey Sachs, director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, raised eyebrows by launching a campaign to lead the World Bank.

But some saw that as a good thing, raising the bar for who could be nominated. Mr. Sachs is also an economist with extensive experience in economic development as well as a health expert who, like Kim, has worked to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Sachs advocated reform for the World Bank.

?Once Sachs [came forward], it was clear it would be very difficult for the Obama administration to follow past practice and simply choose, again, a political insider or a banker,? says Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the left-leaning Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.

Despite not getting the nomination, Sachs expressed his support for Kim via Twitter.

?Jim Kim is a superb nominee for WB. I support him 100%. I thank all who supported me and know they’ll be very pleased with today’s news,? he tweeted.

Several African countries endorsed Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, which was seen as a way to break the US hold on deciding World Bank presidents. Jos? Antonio Ocampo, Colombia?s former Finance minister, was also put forward.

Nokia releases Play To beta, updates Music app for Windows Phone

To follow its announcement of updated Nokia Drive, Maps and Transport apps (and not to forget Creative Studio), the firm in Finland now has two more servings of software to crow about for its Lumia lineup — okay, no more alliterations. We promise. Today, Nokia has announced an updated version of its music app, now dubbed — simply enough — Nokia Music 2.0, along with an entirely new beta package known as Nokia Play To. While the Music upgrade appears to include little more than minor revisions to the wording of certain functions, the Play To software will cater to users of DLNA equipment with its ability to stream photos and videos. Because it’s only in beta form, the means to stream music hasn’t yet arrived, but Nokia intends to bake this ability into a future revision of Play To. For those who’d like to be a Guinea pig for the Espoo crew, just check out Nokia’s source link below.

ForeignBride Product Review : Finding a Model That's Right for You …

lavish — Tags: — unalmost @ 2:27 am

The ?creepy old white guys buying Asian girls? meme is heating up again, thanks in part to a new movie :

?an eccentric modern love story about Steven and Sandy?an aging white man with ?yellow fever? who is obsessed with marrying any Asian woman, and the young Chinese bride he finds online. Debbie, a Chinese American filmmaker, documents and narrates with skepticism and humor, from the early stages of Steven?s search for an Asian bride, through the moment Sandy steps foot in America for the first time, to a year into their precarious union. Global migration, Sino-American relations and the perennial battle of the sexes, weigh in on the fate of their marriage in this intimate and quirky personal documentary?

?

The recent Spearhead essay profiling my own ForeignBride generated a lot of interest and queries from men, who, concerned with the lack of domestic skills combined with the pork-normative obesity in western women, were beginning to consider the possibility of getting their own ForeignBride. So I will kick off the conversation with some simple anecdotes and recommendations for evaluating whether to start your own ForeignBride project, or simply emigrate to friendlier climes.

Many have expressed concern that once a woman arrives to a western country, she will become ?westernized? and create the same sorts of problems for her husband as women deluded through a steady diet of feminist brainwarshing. Another fear is that these women will make false domestic violence accusations and abscond with a man?s sanity and financial assets. Given that professional feminists have made DV into a personally lucrative income stream and passed laws enabling this scam as well as funding initiatives to council foreign brides to take advantage of their husbands, these fears are well-founded.

But if a man does some soul-searching, defines for himself what his true needs and wants are that can be shared with a foreign bride, and importantly, shops carefully among the many options available to him, the chances for finding a loving and supportive companion can be improved greatly.

So education is an important first step. A fella that is considering the ForeignBride route can find a lot of resources on the web to gain an understanding of the process and what he?ll have to do to make it a success. While learning the path to attaining a ForeignBride, the hopeful groom-to-be needs to think about what he wants and consider what realistically may work out for him. The good news is that there are vast numbers of lovely and charming foreign women eager to meet and marry an American man, because outside the U.S., American men are considered top quality in terms of husband material. Along with their good character and talents, these women have strong traditional upbringing and attitudes conducive to making for a happy marriage. Frankly, they consider it their number one duty to make their husband happy, and don?t have the confusing panoply of feminist policy directives swirling around in their heads to complicate their everyday existence.

And what of that drive to please their husband? Perhaps because the marginal of survival is very thin in many lands. A woman?s husband is vitally important to her, because it?s her husband, she lavishes care on him and ensures her own survival. As for subservience, what a laugh. These women, through their expert ways in pleasing a man, quickly take control of the relationship while fooling the dumb brute to think he?s in charge. They tolerate no disrespect. Cross them and the pussy shuts slams shut until he makes entreaties for reprieve. A little knowledge of female psychology can help him get through these difficult times.

So the comments often come up that ?once she gets her Green Card, she?ll take off? or ?she only wants a ticket to the U.S?. To this one can reasonably observe, the U.S. ain?t so great as many would claim, and for most of these women, who love their land and culture, it is difficult indeed to depart and come to live in the frozen wastes of the great North. More likely, your problem will be to convince her to leave her home and come live here, and once she is here, to make her life as comfortable as possible as she adjusts to this strange land, where dogs wear clothes and live in houses, and men live under bridges.

We return then, to the idea that a man needs to define his requirements. They depend on his age, income, personal interests, where he lives, whether he wants children, and how his prospective bride might mesh with those and compliment them. It is a mutual thing. Consider her needs in this equation and your chance for happiness becomes greater. Here?s the thing that has helped my situation a lot and something for you to carefully consider : my wife is Vietnamese, and her cultural bonds are very strong. As it turns out, in many large metropolitan areas there are large numbers of Vietnamese. In some cities they have developed vibrant economic activity, and thus new Viet immigrants can find fellowship and cultural activities to make their life a lot less lonely and homesick. If you live in a rural area, or a cultural demographic that has no connections with her culture, the isolation may be too much for her. At the very least (if you go Asian that is) is that there is a decent Asian market nearby. Ideally, you should spend significant time in her culture and appreciating her ways, and let her build that in your home.

The quantity and quality of foreign women available for matchmaking is astounding. If you have carefully weighed your situation and understand what you want, use the websites to match your needs to hers, make contact, and if you find the one that?s right, go meet her. Get a passport if you don?t have one yet. Vaccinations for the regions you will visit are recommended and can take 6 months for the proper regimen.

The process to get her here takes about 18-24 months initially, then several more years to establish her permanent residency. You need to understand this process in detail, even if you hire an immigration attorney to do the work for you. It may cost you $20,000 or more after all the fees and travel. The upside of this will be the fun in traveling to her country. I lived with my bride there for awhile and had a great time. As for success in getting her fiance? visa, the great majority of K-1 visas applied for are granted. In 2009, 95 percent of the K-1 visa applications were approved: out of 29,127 K-1 visas applied for, 27,678 were issued, and 1,449 refused, and 1,266 were waived/overcome.

It will likely be a real challenge for her to live here, as well as for the two of you to build a relationship. On a positive note, you will likely find her very adaptable and eager to learn about her new home and language. As you have seen from the photos in the last essay, the benefits to a marrying a foreign lady can be very satisfying and a just reward for the sacrifices you have made to bring her to live with you.

Dumb Employers, Lucky Startups And An Untapped Reservoir

lavish — Tags: — unalmost @ 9:27 pm

ReservoirA group of women is re-entering the workforce today and reshaping how products are made across key tech sectors like health & wellness, commerce and social products. Not only do they have the experience of raising families, but they’ve been business and technology leaders earlier in life. They’re becoming founders and leaders at startups and in the very companies they’ve been buying products and services from. Not only do women make most of a family’s health decisions but 48% of graduating physicians are women and women compose 73% of medical and health services managers. As a healthtech startup, we think heavily about the importance of what I call the Family Chief Health & Wellness Officer (aka “Mom”). Avado is not unlike many startups in that we have two male co-founders. We’d be fools to not figure out ways to bring the female perspective into our business.

Pfizer Loses Yet Another Viagra Trademark Dispute in China | China …

lavish — Tags: , , — unalmost @ 7:08 pm

I never thought I?d be writing about a Viagra IP case in 2012. I?ve literally been talking about a variety of patent and trademark disputes involving this product since at least 2000. It?s been a decidedly bumpy ride.

The latest is not exactly earth-shattering news, but seeing as it fits together nicely with other trademark cases I?ve been talking about lately, including Herm?s,?Michael Jordan and Chivas Regal, I thought it was a good idea. For the record, yes, this is another trademark squatting case.

The facts: in 2003, a Shenzhen electrical goods company called Ying Jia applied for the ????LittleViagra? trademark for certain kinds of electronic products (presumably in Class 9, in which they own a couple other marks). Pfizer opposed the registration, and the decision went to the Trademark Review and Adjudication Board (TRAB), which eventually ruled in favor of Ying Jia. Pfizer appealed that decision, and the Beijing First Intermediate Court, which handles all TRAB appeals, upheld the administrative decision. (This was reported locally here yesterday and today, although I do not have a specific date on the ruling. If I?ve somehow stumbled on an old dispute, consider this post an historical case study instead of news!)

Pfizer registered the ?Viagra? mark in China in Class 5 (pharmaceuticals) but not Class 9. You?ll notice that I haven?t yet mentioned the ????? part of Ying Jia?s trademark ? more on that later, it?s a bitch of a story to explain.

So Pfizer has a mark in Class 5 and Ying Jia is trying to file a functionally identical mark in Class 9. By now, you probably know what happens next. Pfizer has to argue that it deserves expanded protection on account of the mark having well-known status. This is exactly what was argued in the Herm?s?and Chivas Regal cases.

And like those disputes, Pfizer lost here, with the court saying that: 1) it did not find Pfizer?s evidence of well-known status to be sufficient; and 2) it did not believe that there was a significant risk of consumer confusion.

Since I?ve written about the first issue, well-known status and evidentiary challenges, several times before, let?s just look at this issue of consumer confusion. Here we had a pharmaceutical product used to treat impotency (I?m old school with the terminology) on the one hand, and computer peripheral devices (e.g. printers) on the other. Not only did Pfizer have to show that customers in that sector were aware of the ?Viagra? brand, but also that they would be confused as to the origin of the electronic products, mistakenly believing that Ying Jia had some connection to Pfizer.

There are some other trademark theories, such as dilution, that were not discussed in the press reports. It would be interesting to know whether Pfizer could have used such an argument or whether it would have been a moot point given its problems with well-known status. Anyway, no need to complicate this post further, because we?re about to get to the real weird stuff.

In China trademark circles, Viagra/Pfizer is known as the poster child for foreign companies that failed to register Chinese-language trademarks. If you wondered why Pfizer had to argue its well-known status based on its English mark ?Viagra,? it?s because Pfizer doesn?t actually own the commonly-used Chinese language name ???? (wei ge ? big brother), in China. Lots of other companies registered it first, even before Pfizer introduced the product to the Mainland in 2000. If you go to the Trademark Office database and do a search for ???,? you?ll find a whole lot of folks who own that mark, including many in Class 5. Ouch.

Seriously, go do a search. It?s fun, and you?ll see lots of entertaining ???? combo marks, including words like ?VIGA? (which sounds vaguely dirty to me), ?VIGOUR,? ?WEIBROTHER,? ?VIAGRLY,? and (my favorite) ???? VIAGRA CONDOM? ? that last one just sounds dangerous.

Viagra is known as ???? in China, so any discussion of well known status that begins and ends with the English mark ?Viagra? is going to be problematic. Pfizer has been playing catch-up with this product?s IP from the beginning, although it has been successful in terms of patent and 3D trademark (the triangular shape of the tablet). But when it comes to the Chinese name, the IP dispute has been FUBAR.

Consider that if you do some searches in Chinese for Viagra, you?ll generally get hits on ???.? If you go to the Pfizer site here, you?ll see lots of information about ????? (wan ai ke, Viagra?s official Chinese name). Pfizer has registered ????? in quite a few Classes (I counted seventeen, including Classes 5 and 9).

But wait. There?s also ????? (wei er gang, Viagra?s name in Taiwan) ? are you confused yet? Pfizer registered this mark in several Classes in China as well, mostly combo marks that included the Chinese characters and English word. Tragically, although these were filed in May of 1999, Pfizer did not file the ???? mark as well. Epic fail.

So there you have it. In part because of a failure to apply for a Chinese name in 1999 that the public had already adopted, Pfizer lost a case in 2012. So another trademark squatter wins. And let?s not get into a discussion of who is the ?good guy? and who is the ?bad guy.? Pfizer made a mistake over a decade ago, and this squatter took advantage of it. I assume no one out there is going to argue that Ying Jia?s use of both ?Viagra? and ???? in the same application was a happy coincidence.

On a final note, I?d just like to say that I just wrote over 900 words about Viagra with nary a limp dick joke or stupid headline pun. We strive for excellence here at China Hearsay. If anyone chooses to re-post this with a sophomoric headline (I?m looking at you, Business Insider), I will not be held responsible.

Do you have Veterinary pet insurance? | Auto Repair Victorid

lavish — Tags: — unalmost @ 5:37 am

When our bird got sick and we had to take it in to the vet, they asked us if we had veterinary pet insurance. I explained to her that we did and I fished out the information and gave it to her. After the vet took a look at our bird, he said that he would probably be well in a month or so with the medication and change in diet. I was so relieved to hear that our pet would be just fine. Giving our bird the medication turned out to be much more difficult than we expected and we ended up back at the vet?s office. The vet adjusted the prescription to something that could go into the food to make it easier.? It was great there was another option or I may have ended up at the emergency room from all of the pecking the bird was doing to my hands.
